FoNS at Ludlow Medieval Christmas Fayre

Standard

What a fabulous event!  It’s the first time that the Friends of Newport Ship have visited the Medieval Christmas Fayre that takes place within the walls of Ludlow Castle.imag1716

Ludlow castle has outer walls and an inner keep.  Within the keep were the main attractions, the medieval surgeon, the falconry master and the re-enactors camp.  Outside was the main market, in which FoNS had our stall.

The weather forecast was bright and clear….. and cold!  Very cold!!  The crowds were queuing, waiting to come in each morning, eager to look around the vast array of craft stalls, listen to the music from a wide variety of minstrels armed with all sorts of ‘interesting’ instruments.

imag0557The FoNS ‘medieval gazebo’ (complete with our travelling exhibition and a wide selection of our retail stock) was sited to catch everybody that was on the way out.  Many history enthusiasts stopped to find out more about the project, even some from Newport and Cardiff who had never heard of the Newport Medieval Ship!

It was a long day – the event closed at 9pm on the Saturday.  There was a rime of frost forming on the display outside the gazebo!  Time to retreat to a local hostelry for food and warmth, ready for Sunday opening, and doing it all over again.  This great event finished at 4pm when we were able to strike down and get home for a Sunday dinner!

The Friends of Newport Ship intend to be out and about next year at all sorts of events, all over the country. We aim to raise awareness of the project as well as raising funds for the Ship Centre development.  If you want to come and help out, to help tell our stories and inspire others to join the crew, then please get in touch.  Watch our website for more details of where we are and when – and come out and see and support us.

Young Friends Get Knotted

Standard

At the Ship Centre, we are starting to focus on things that our younger visitors can do to help to understand life a sea on a sailing vessel in medieval times.

Two younger visitors are getting started with some knots – in this case clove hitches which help to secure a line to a post or cleat.

It does have two faults: it can slip and, paradoxically, can also bind. If it is used to secure something like a boat’s fender, then once adjusted, it can be further secured by adding 2 half-hitches.

If you want to try your hand at this, and other knots, bends and hitches, then come on down to the Ship Centre during our regular opening hours this coming Friday and Saturday (see website for details) and our volunteers will help you get all tied up.

You can also come and pick up your Newport Uskmouth Rotary Raffle Tickets – only £1 each – and you could win £500.!

Save the date: Our favourite Barber-Surgeon in residence

Standard

Special Event: Saturday 18 June, 10.30am – 4pm

Our favourite Barber-Surgeon will be in residence @ the Ship Centre

Roger Morgan will be with us for the day with all his wondrous medieval medical equipment, and his favourite pet leeches.  Come and hear him talk about medicine in the 15th century.  But beware, don’t mention that you have toothache otherwise he’ll pull out all your teeth and replace them with a wooden set!

Roger works at CADW and was involved with the Agincourt 600 commemorations where he featured on a special episode of Coast to Coast as his alter ego, the travelling barber-surgeon.

Don’t forget, the Ship Centre reopens to the public on Friday 12 February, with regular opening on Fridays, Saturdays and Bank Holidays.  Group visits can be arranged by appointment.  See our website for details

Medieval Life and Weapons Display

Standard

As a special treat on Saturday 8 August, our old friend Mike will be hosting a ‘show and tell’ display at the Ship Centre.

He will have general living ware of the period, plus weaponry, clothing and light armour – most of the things that travellers to Newport would have seen when they were there at the same time as our Ship.

The Ship Centre is open on Fridays and Saturdays from 10.30am to 4.30pm at Unit 20, Estuary Road, Queensway Meadows Industrial Estate, Newport, NP19 4SY.
